ENGLAND & the GOODWOOD REVIVAL, 2009

The Goodwood Revival is the only major sporting event in the world to take place completely in period.  Furthermore, Goodwood is the only classic circuit in the world to be entirely in its original form and the whole site has been maintained and dressed to be exactly how it was in the hayday of motor racing – perfect in every detail.  It is the ultimate experience – a magical step back in time to a different era, celebrating both motor racing and flying.  You will enjoy the thrill of watching the world’s most exotic and valuable historic racing cars being driven absolutely on the limit.  The event is an intoxicating mix of incredible machinery, extraordinary driving, fabulous fashion, and the glorious noise of the world’s most evocative cars and aircraft.

Steve Austin will once again be leading the tour.  Good food and good companionship is always ‘the rigeur’ for our trips – this is a tough tour not to have a great time on!

ITINERARY

DAY  1   Sept. 13      Arrival in Heathrow, London with a 12 noon pick-up. Please note your departure from the USA needs to be on Sept.12.  Afternoon hotel arrival at Stratford upon Avon.  This evening a cocktail reception and introduction  followed by dinner.

DAY 2, Sept. 14  Touring the Cotswold countryside including visits to the British Car Museum at Gaydon and the Cotswold Motor Museum at Bourton-on-the-Water.  Dinner with a guest speaker.

DAY  3  Sept. 15  Visits today will include a top Porsche Rally prepare shop, one of the oldest Aston Martin race and restoration shops and a visit to the Aston Martin customer special preparation center.  Late in the afternoon we head for London and our South Kensington Hotel.  This evening Alain de Cadenet joins us for dinner.

DAY  4, Sept. 16  This morning Alain takes us on a walkabout of the Kensington Mews with visits to a number of private garages.  Many cars are being prepared for the Revival and we should have the opportunity to talk with some of the entrants. Following lunch at one of the oldest pubs in London we’ll take a side trip out to visit the Battle of Britain museum.  Alain will again join us and add some extra color to this already fabulous museum.  This evening is left to your leisure.  We will be happy to help you arrange tickets to a West End Theatre production.

DAY  5, Sept. 17* 5-day program starts today.  Midday we depart for the south coast of England and Portsmouth,  our Goodwood Revival base.   Later this afternoon we are invited to view the annual Cricket Match at Lord March’s Estate, each year this private event is the unofficial start for the racers to the Goodwood Revival.  Afternoon tea is on the lawn.  Alain will attempt to explain the rules of cricket (no one really cares) and welcome us to this years Festival.  There will also be a Spitfire fly-by. Our four star hotel, the Portsmouth Marriott will be our home for the next four nights.  This evening, dinner is at the hotel with Le Mans winner and Formula 1 ace Richard Attwood.

DAY  6  Sept. 18  This morning we visit the leading historic car collection of Lord Montague’s ‘National Motor Museum’ at nearby Beaulieu.  This afternoon we start our week-end at the Goodwood Revival.  Today is practice and qualifying.  For the afternoon we have general entry to the event allowing you to visit all the exhibits, shops. displays and of course the track.  Adding to the atmosphere there are continuous fly-by's and dog fights from a fleet of World War II airplanes including Spitfires, Hurricanes, Messerschmidt's and Mustangs.  Early afternoon we are met by auction guru Richard Hudson-Evans for a private preview to the Bonham's Auction starting latrer in the afternoon.   We have also included free admission to the auction. A special treat tonight – we have been invited to attend the ‘Hog Roast’.  This charity event involves an open-air party on a private estate and includes a ‘wild pig’ roast, beerfest, rock bands and dancing – many of the Goodwood crowd will be ‘dancing the night away’.

DAY 7  Sept. 19  For Saturday and Sunday you are provided with VIP passes to the Private Pavilion’s and also access to the Paddock.  To visit the paddock area requires period dress.  Once again we are met by Alain   who will lead us on a tour through the Paddock, his knowledge of the cars and the event is quite remarkable.  Many famous drivers will be in the paddock and with Alain's help we should have the chance to hear from one or two of them. Saturday at the Revival is quite relaxed with great opportunities to mix with many of the drivers.  Your Pavilion serves breakfast, lunch and high tea plus beverages throughout the day, its location also allows for track viewing.  Today we are joined for afternoon tea by Sir Stirling Moss.  Dinner this evening is at your own leisure.

DAY  8  Sept. 20    A full day to enjoy the 'Goodwood Revival'.  Once again VIP passes allow you to thoroughly enjoy all aspects of this great event.  While the cars may be considered 'historic racers', there is little quarter given by the drivers.  The racing is keen and truly competitive.  You will have the opportunity to see some great champion drivers negotiating one of the finest race circuits of the world.  At midday there is also a superb fly-by of veteran and modern aircraft by the Royal Air Force.  There is also additional seating in the Grandstands to get maximum enjoyment from the day’s racing.  This afternoon we are joined for tea by the all round brilliant driver Brian Redman. This evening we are joined for dinner by the great F1 driver and 5 time winner of Le Mans, Derek Bell.

DAY  9  Sept. 21     This morning our tour concludes.   Following breakfast private transfers to Heathrow or downtown London will be arranged..
